Coligny Plaza Celebrates 65 Years as Hilton Head’s Downtown
In 1955, before there was even a bridge to Hilton Head Island, Norris and Lois Richardson created Forest Beach Market as their first business venture on the dirt roads and wild dunes of the Island. With building materials shipped by ferry, they built the first grocery store on Hilton Head Island. Their first and largest customer was Charles Fraser who famously went on to develop and build his fortune with Sea Pines.
Many more firsts would follow. As Forest Beach Market expanded into Coligny Plaza it included Hilton Head Island’s first bakery, hair salon, clothing store, laundromat, dry cleaners, car wash, ice cream parlor, pharmacy, movie theatre, south end post office, bike rental, fast food (a short-order restaurant called The Fin & Feather), and even the first Hilton Head Island real estate office.
Shop by shop and service by service, they built Hilton Head Island’s downtown by hand, never wavering in their dedication. Even after his son JR took over the family business, Norris could still be seen frequenting Coligny’s many shops and keeping an eye on his creation. Under the care of JR and his wife Leslie, Coligny has thrived and grown, fulfilling Norris’ vision of Coligny as Hilton Head Island’s Downtown with over 60 shops, services, and restaurants.
In celebration of Coligny’s 65 years, we are launching a year-long celebration with 65 “stories/memories” from the merchants and owners that have helped build this, one of the Island’s most successful businesses. We will be focusing on the Hilton Head Island “neighbors” who own, manage, and support the plaza every day and make us who we are.
